The first rule of medicine: do no harm. A rule that our providers take to heart and can be a challenge on medical missions. Without detailed medical records, labs and radiology reports, our medical team is often “flying blind.” Not only is there a language barrier, but there are often cultural nuances that would be impossible to bridge without the help of locals. From volunteer translators to physicians freely donating their time, our team has learned so much through collaboration with the citizens of Honduras.

Together, with local doctors like Lorrie, Sharon, Keith and Gabriel, we are able to formulate a plan and arrange for close follow up to ensure continuity of care. The relationship is symbiotic - we are all learning from one another. And this collaborative effort ultimately leads to the best and highest quality patient care.

Our dynamite family medicine duo are all smiles when it comes to collaboration. Even with a line of patients outside their door, they never hesitate to answer a question, look at a rash or network with other physicians in the states. After hearing a story of a young girl with a congenital heart defect, Dr. Frizelle did not hesitate when it came to connecting with a pediatric cardiologist and cardiothoracic surgeons to discuss a complex case. 

The collaborative efforts of our physical therapist and her team helped a 7-year-old boy with severe cerebral palsy stand and walk for the first time. Additionally, our dental crew was lucky enough to have Dr. Miguel from Roatan join our team for the second year in a row. 

As we prepare for our 5th and final day of clinic in Honduras, we cannot help but feel grateful for the generosity and kindness of the locals without whom this trip would not be possible.
