The team bus was boarded by 6:45 am with wheels down headed back to the school for a FULL day! We were greeted by school administrators, locals and all of the school kids dressed in their uniforms DESPITE having today and tomorrow off school! They presented us with such a lovely program filled with prayer, their national anthem, local dances and kind words of appreciation for us.

The team endured a blazing hot day, without a moment of cloud cover relief. Thankfully the rain held off and allowed us to treat well over 200 patients for a second day in a row. We met with many families, young and old - contemplating and calculating complaints ranging from aches and chronic pain to digestive issues, orthopedic joint discomfort to MUCH attention again in pediatrics and gynecology. The flawlessness of the team collaboration on Day 2 was a site to behold. We appeared to be a well oiled machine, when the reality is we are a team filled with “first-timers”!

We closed out the day watching many happy faces leave our clinic, arms filled with vitamins, bags containing antibiotics to ease the stress of pain, new eyeglasses, sunglasses and market items galore. While we had to turn away nearly 125 people due to time constraints, we assured each of them if they return tomorrow we will have a slot waiting! The Hondurans of Roatan are so grateful we have come to serve them, they happily said their farewells at days end saying they would see us to “manana”.

Our team gathered in the Orlando and Charleston airports to meet up in Atlanta for the final leg of the journey to Honduras. This was a day of travel and getting to know a new team. After we had walked across the sunny and windy tarmac from the plane and waited in line in the hot and humid arrivals hall, we were excited to efficiently make it through the Honduran customs with all of our bags, forty of them, carrying medical supplies, crutches, walkers, and lots of reading glasses.

Following a quick stop at a grocery store for the mandatory supply of snacks and drinks, we had a few hours to see the tourist side of the island, including some time to wander and meet folks. We had several interactions where people noticed our shirts and inquired about what we were here to provide, or they recognized us from our prior trips here! This gave us a great opportunity to share about our mission here in Roatán. They were very happy to hear about our free clinic and started spreading the news. We even had a local nurse and her friend offer to come help translate.

Back at the hotel, we sorted through boxes and boxes of medications. Team bonding and planning for day 1 of clinic! What a wonderful experience so far.

Father David shared the story about the Good Samaritan during our morning reflection and challenged the team to share examples of mercy. Several of our male leaders, including Jerry and Mark, felt a calling to connect with young men after hearing several stories about their afflictions and its adverse impact on their families in the Guanaja community.

One gentleman confessed that his substance abuse led to financial hardships for his wife and two young children. Expressing remorse and desire to change, Father David was able to recommend a Celebrate Recovery program that he learned about from another gentleman seen in our clinic the day prior. While this young Honduran male was relieved to learn about this opportunity, he admitted he was apprehensive to attend alone.

Touched by this story, Father David and Mark made special arrangements to attend Celebrate Recovery with their new friend.

We learned that all men need one thing - someone with whom they are safe enough to be vulnerable.

With men like Rob, Chris, Mark, Jerry, Miguel, Father David and David III. we were able to provide a safe haven to many. These amazing male leaders were able to show enough empathy, compassion and support for this and many other patients to feel comfortable enough expressing their needs and insecurities. With their encouragement, this one man is now willing to take the first step forward in healing and recovery.

Sometimes it only takes one act of kindness. One small gesture. One person to change a life. Our men did ALL of this . As a result, not only did they change his life, but the life of his family as well.

Let’s continue to show mercy, grace and kindness to all we meet. We never know what battles others are facing, but it is always great to know that we are never alone!
#moremercy #menonamission #neveralone #bekind #vulnerablemenrock

A team of 26 missionaries from four states embarked on a week-long medical outreach early Saturday morning traveling with over 52 large bags carrying a variety of donated medical, DME, pharmaceuticals and marketplace items. With their support we efficiently and charismatically provided medical and dental care to over 200 patients.

Our specialized team was able to offer orthopedic, gynecologic, obstetrics and cardiac services to those in need. Our team cannot wait for another opportunity to learn, grow and serve the amazing humans of Honduras tomorrow.
