Not only were we able to provide equipment needed, we were able to train local providers on appropriate use of this new technology, which arrived just in the nick of time as we were wrapping up our final day of clinic.

We are thankful for this and so many more shining moments shared with Guanaja. All things in moderation. On the 7th day even God rested and the P4GH team couldn’t agree more.

After unveiling a large pulsatile mass that had been protruding on the knee of a 14 year old girl resulting from a fall 7 years prior, our orthopedic team worked feverishly to find a solution. Ali and Dr. Rob, knowing the gravity of the situation, were able to collaborate with a vascular surgeon from Roper St. Francis Hospital who recommended a CTA. Unfortunately, expensive diagnostics such as these are not an available service in Guanaja nor the surrounding area.

With the help of Dr. Ellie Oakman, our resident OB/GYN, we were able to use a doppler ultrasound that the P4GH team brought and confirm a 7x10 cm aneurysm on the girl's knee. Together, our multidisciplinary team diagnosed a vascular malformation that requires surgical intervention. With that, we still needed to find a surgical solution.

Serendipitously, at the airport in Charleston we ran into Dr. McFadden, another RSFH surgeon, who was working on mainland Honduras teaching residents. We contacted him and with the video information from our ultrasound, he was able to confirm that it is possible to fix this vascular malformation at the local teaching hospital. With our help, she will most likely be offered a life changing operation on Dr. McFadden's next trip to Honduras. This is a true example of how the RSFH community comes together to heal all patients with compassion, faith and excellence.

To celebrate this monumental occasion and our service at Savannah Bight, the P4GH team took a day of rest for team building and exploration of our beautiful surroundings. We traveled to the north shore where we split into three group adventures – diving, fishing and a hike to the La Cascada waterfall. Once complete we met for lunch and finished the day snorkling the amazing reef, kayaking and enjoying the sandy beach.

The day ended with a birthday cake for one of missionaries celebrating his big day with the team. The friendships we deepened and the laughter we shared have prepared us for the next three days of clinic at Bonacca Cay.
