Coming Together

Day 2 of Clinic

Our mission is much more than a diagnosis or a treatment plan—it is about how we all come together.

One of our first patients was a man with a history of stroke, brought in by his wife. We needed to brace his affected foot, so we gave him our shoes, put the brace in them, and we continued. While working with him on his hand, balance, positioning, and walking, his wife mentioned that he also had a sore on his back. What began as a rehabilitation visit quickly became a collaborative effort involving our interpreter, OT, PT, PA, physicians, and wound care nurses. Six people from different specialties came together around one patient.

The following day, we continued his wound care with a home visit.

Then there was a mother who had just received a difficult diagnosis concerning her baby. She waited patiently as we worked to arrange her follow-up care, quietly carrying the weight of what she had heard. Then, while breast feeding her baby, she had an altered state of consciousness. Our pediatric providers and helpers quickly recognized it.

Immediately, people stepped in. Our runner and docs helped move her to safety. Our adult physician from next door came running to help stabilize her. Our interpreter took the baby and began comforting him. A local doctor sat with the mother, talked with her, and helped bring her out of the episode—without needing to give her an injection.

Everyone had a role. Everyone noticed something different. Everyone helped.

And that may be one of the greatest lessons of practicing medicine here.

Medicine looks different in different places. Resources, systems, cultural expectations, and approaches to illness are not the same. We are learning that culture deeply influences how people understand suffering, what they expect from life, and when and how they seek care.

But compassion translates everywhere.

These stories remind us that a medical mission isn’t about one doctor, one specialty, or one intervention.

It is about all of us coming together for one person at a time.
