First Day on Bonacca Cay

We made it to day four which led our P4GH team to a new site in Bonacca, Guanaja, where most people in Guanaja call home. Never having been to this densely populated Cay, our leaders arrived early to scope the layout to determine our clinic’s flow. It was apparent from the start that today would be different and we quickly learned that teamwork truly makes the dream work!

Our medical providers see a large volume of patients each day that is only made possible by the hard working and supportive non-medical teammates that round out our team. From pre-planning the logistics of the mission, to coordinating while on the ground, this team truly makes the work of our providers run smoothly and efficient. They set-up, tear down, repair broken items and check in on everyone to ensure they have what they need (including water.) They even learn certain roles like taking vitals so others can take a break!

A small team of medical professionals play the multiple roles of intake, triage and being our radiant runners. This role is responsible for making sure each person is cared for and seen by the correct specialist in tight and very warm conditions while never complaining and always smiling.

Once patients have been seen by a provider, they are directed to visit our marketplace and offered an opportunity to visit with our pastor. At the marketplace patients will receive toothbrushes, toothpaste, and reading glasses if needed. They are also offered clothing, school and craft supplies along with toys for the children.

The quiet angels in the pharmacy, led by our pharmacist, go largely unrecognized, but are one of the most crucial components of our team. Not only do they fill at least three prescriptions per patient, they do it with 100% accuracy and furthermore educate the patients to improve compliance and understanding.

The above roles are the backbone of our clinic's operation. Together with our talented and passionate medical and dental providers, the P4GH team members work together each day to ensure a meaningful and memorable visit for all who come through their door. Today was yet another example of our well oiled machine and a great reminder that teamwork makes the dreamwork!

We are here doing God’s work - whether it's serving patients through dentistry, medical care, ministry or sheer work ethic - together we are changing lives one day at a time.
